How to split expenses on a group trip
Group trips are more fun when nobody is doing mental maths at dinner. Here’s a simple system for before, during and after the trip.

Most money friction on trips comes from the same three places: costs nobody agreed on up front, expenses nobody wrote down, and a messy settle-up at the end. A little structure fixes all three.
Before the trip: agree the rules
- Shared by everyone: lodging, car rental, gas, groceries for the house.
- Shared by whoever joins: activities, tours, tickets, meals out.
- Personal: souvenirs and anything only one person wanted.
- Different lengths of stay: split lodging by nights (shares) rather than equally.
During the trip: log costs as they happen
The receipt in your pocket is the one you forget. Add each cost when you pay, with the right people included. It takes seconds, and it means there’s nothing to reconstruct later.
- Whoever pays adds the expense.
- Untick anyone who wasn’t part of it.
- Use shares or adjustments when one person had more (or less).
- Glance at the running totals every day or two so there are no surprises.
After the trip: settle once
After a week of different people paying for different things, debts point in every direction. Debt simplification combines them so the group settles with the fewest payments — often one payment per person.
| Alex paid | Cabin $640 |
|---|---|
| Sam paid | Lift tickets $396 |
| Jo paid | Groceries $128 |
| Riley paid | Gas $72 (split with Alex only) |
Net positions: Alex +$313, Sam +$105, Jo −$163, Riley −$255. Simplified, that’s three payments: Riley pays Alex $255, Jo pays Alex $58 and Jo pays Sam $105.
Doing it in SplitBank
Create a Trip group before you leave and share the invite link in your group chat. Add costs as you go, untick people who skipped something, and check the group’s Totals and Charts along the way. When you’re home, tap Settle up — with simplify debts on, SplitBank shows the minimum payments and opens Venmo, Cash App or PayPal with the amounts filled in.
Frequently asked questions
It works for small groups, but it leaves one person out of pocket for weeks. Spreading the big costs across two or three people and logging everything is usually easier.
Tap the currency on the amount and pick the local one. SplitBank converts it to US dollars at the day’s rate, free, and you can type in the exact rate your card charged instead. The original amount stays on the expense.
